Sydney Gay Adoption?

Question by milo: Sydney Gay Adoption?
I am enquiring, what are the rules for adoption for myself and my partner?

We are going to live in Sydney, and we are very keen to adopt a child and do not know the proceudres? and rules?
We have been in a very stable gay relationship, we have also been married in the UK (gay marriage / civil partnership)

We are moving to Australia from the UK (I am an Australian citizen)

Can we adopt in Australia?
Who should we apply to adopt?
If we adopt overseas can we still bring our child to Australia?

Any information would be appreciated and look forward hearing from someone soon on how we can adopt.

I found this in Wikipedia:

Adoption for same-gender couples:

Adoption for same-sex couples is currently available only in one state and one territory and Victoria (Australia) (from December 2007). Regarding Tasmania, only stepchild adoption is possible regardless of gender. The Commonwealth or federal government of Australia plans the make all overseas adoption of children for same-sex couples illegal from 1 January 2008 under a new ‘provision’ or ‘Amendment’ of the Family Law Act[citation needed].

Status in the States and Territories
Full adoption available;

Australian Capital Territory (2006)
Western Australia (2002)
Victoria (from December 2007)
Step child adoption only;

Tasmania (2004)

New South Wales
South Australia
Illegal to allow same-gender couples to adopt children;

Northern Territory
References and sources

In addition, I understand it is very difficult to adopt in general in the UK.

You might want to research where you want to live if you are set on adopting! Just google “Same Sex Adoption” then the location and read about what the specific ruling and climate for adoption is there.

Q&A: Would like to adopt a child from India…need some information please!?

Question by Jess: Would like to adopt a child from India…need some information please!?
I am getting married in less than 2 months and my fiance and i are beginning to look into adoption organizations in India.

I am aware that we will not be considered for application until we’ve been married for approximately 2 years….but we’re doing the research now so when we do want to adopt, we will have a plan.

The problem we’ve been encountering is that many adoption agencies give preference to Indian families in inter-country adoptions. My fiance and I are Bosnian, and Swedish, respectively, so we’re finding it difficult to find an agency that would be willing to work with us.

If you’ve adopted from India, know someone who has, or are otherwise familiar with the process I would be very appreciative if you could share what you know.

Thanks so much for all of your help!
Just in case it comes up again; We are not adopting from India solely because we want to “help” the less fortunate. If that was our sole motivation we wpuld not be focused on any particular country and would likely adopt from the US.

The truth of the matter is that both my fiance and I traveled to India about 5 years ago and fell in love with the people, and culture.

And by the way…the United States isn’t recognized as being overpopulated. Our population density/square mile is less than virtually every developed country. But thanks for your concern.
…I should’ve clarified, we are citizens of and are living in the U.S.
To the final comment; your answer presupposes that every race is distinguishable from one another beginning at birth. Your asenine response exemplifies the epitome of American ignorance. If my husband and I were to adopt an infant from India (or any other country for that matter) we would be as qualified to raise that child as a child from Bosnia, Sweden, or the U.S.

How do you explain that so many children adopted from other nations live happy, well-adjusted lives when their parents are from a different “culture” than their own?

If you were a knowledgable human rights activist you would understand that culture is acquired, not innate, therefore a child from India could be raised as an American without any repercussions…just as an American child could be raised in India without any ill-effects or counter-culturally turmoil.

I know its all good to try to help people, but adopting from other countries is just overpopulating the U.S, adopt in the U.S

Has debating the topic of adoption ever made you violent?

Question by magdalene: Has debating the topic of adoption ever made you violent?
I have had issues with my daughter, who adopted a child overseas against my say so. I am angry with her to the point of writing her out of my will and trying to get her out of my life. My friend came over and she kept trying to defend my daughter and adoption as a whole, which made me nearly slap her. I raised my hand to try to shut her up but I didn’t actually hit her. It just made me so angry that she would defend these scumbag adopters and agencies. Has anyone else ever felt the urge to slap people who defend those despicable people?

I think the real question here is why you have so much anger towards the concept of adoption and people who adopt.

It sounds like you’ve already lost a daughter and are on your way to losing a friend over these reactions. The anger you are experiencing is hurting your relationships with people. Look towards addressing that anger.

They’re all good at getting kiddies. You have to be more specific about “good” and include how much money you have to spend. It will make a big difference.
